Attorney David L. Stretch attended The Hotchkiss School, a private preparatory school in Lakeville, Connecticut. He is a graduate of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where he received a degree in music. Attorney Stretch obtained his law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, California.
New York State Bar Admission
While in law school he clerked for two San Francisco law firms, and took a position with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City, upon graduation from law school in 1976. At Metropolitan Life he worked in the group insurance National Accounts division and was assigned responsibility for several major clients, including the American Can Company. While working at Metropolitan Life Attorney Stretch took and passed the New York State bar examination in 1978, but continued to work in the group insurance division, not in the law division, until 1980 when he moved to Honolulu, Hawaii.
Hawaii State Bar Admission
In Hawaii, Attorney Stretch clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Walter Heen for approximately one year and took and passed the Hawaii State bar examination in 1980. Attorney Stretch next worked for several Honolulu law firms doing general insurance defense law, until 1987 when he took a position as the Director of the Hawaii Institute for Continuing Legal Education developing and presenting educational programs for the Hawaii State Bar Association.
Illinois State Bar Admission
Attorney Stretch moved from Hawaii to Illinois to take a position with the American Bar Association in 1989 as the Director of National Institutes in the Legal Education Department of the ABA. As the Director of National Institutes he was responsible for the design and presentation of two-day to three-day seminars for lawyers presented throughout the United States.
Attorney Stretch left the American Bar Association to take a position with the Florida based firm of Holland & Knight as its in-house director of training for attorneys. Attorney Stretch next worked as the Director of Training for the North American offices of Baker & McKenzie. While working for Baker & McKenzie, Attorney Stretch passed the Illinois State bar examination in 1995. In 1998 he left Baker & McKenzie to return to the private practice of law. Since 1998 Attorney Stretch has worked primarily as a sole practitioner and has concentrated on the practice of bankruptcy law. He was an associate in the law firm of Weisz Michling & Hofmann in Woodstock, Illinois for two years.
Attorney Stretch has two adult daughters, Sara and Charlotte. Attorney Stretch has always been involved in music and has sung for many years at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Barrington, Illinois, and more recently at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Woodstock, Illinois. He also sings in a small a cappella group, the Chicago Redhots, and has a lot of fun singing the national anthem for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field each year, among other singing engagements.
